In a world where Vampires, Zombies and Werewolves have been declared legal citizens of the United States, Anita Blake is an “animator” - a profession that involves raising the dead for mourning relatives. But Anita is also known as a fearsome hunter of criminal vampires, and she’s often employed to investigate cases that are far too much for conventional police. But as Anita gains the attention of the vampire masters of her hometown of St. Louis, she also risks revealing an intriguing secret about herself - the source of her unusual strength and power.

In this hoot of a book, the intrepid and (ultimately) unsinkable Sookie Stackhouse, a barmaid in Bon Temps, Louisiana, zeros in on the handsome stranger who has pulled up a chair in her section. She rapidly identifies him as the town's first vampire, and asks him his name. It's Bill. "Bill? I thought vampires were all named Alphonse or Langford," Sookie objects. It goes on from there. Whether it's our heroine getting Bill the Vamp to lecture on his service in the Civil War to her grandmother's chapter of Descendants of the Glorious Dead, or the practical issues of romance with someone who has to be underground at daybreak, there's a lot of good stuff here. This may be my favorite vampire story yet. It's the only one I've read that has a were-collie character too!

Betsy Taylor turns 30, gets laid off, is killed by an SUV and wakes up dead all in the same week. The vampire community is convinced she's their prophesied Queen. But she's not having any of it - she's got shoes to buy! And now the undead world is being turned upside-down by a Bela Lugosi throwback and her subjects expect her to take care of it! Why didn't she read the handbook? But her would-be consort, Eric Sinclair, is (annoyingly) ever-present. If only he wasn't so tall, dark, gorgeous...and undead.

Former-bounty-hunter Rachel Morgan has it pretty good. She's left the corrupt Inderland Runner Service and started her own independent service. She's survived werewolves, shape-changing demons, bad-hair days, and sharing a church with her vampire roommate Ivy. She even has a cute (if human) boyfriend-what more could a witch want?

But living with a reformed vampire isn't all it's cracked up to be, particularly when your roommate's very bad ex-boyfriend wants her back, and wouldn't mind you in the process. And especially when he's six feet of sheer supernatural seduction, and you've got a demon mark that makes vampires literally hotter than hell....

To save herself and Ivy, Rachel must confront the vampire master-and the dark secrets she's hidden even from herself.

This is a suspenseful, intriguing murder mystery. Grafton has an eye for detail and a gift for creating characters. Kinsey is an especially memorable detective. She's tough and no-nonsense, but still has her vulnerable points. She's smart, but not a superwoman; rather, a believable, down-to-earth heroine. I love how it is set in a time before cursed cell phones and the internet, where Kinsey has to use her brains and wits and tenacity to solve the case, a real detective!

The matter-of-fact narration is very effective. We get insights into Kinsey's detection technique along the way. This is a story of murder, sex, greed, and deception, well told by Grafton.

Originally begun as a short story, the book took off as Anne wrote it, spinning the tragic and triumphant life experiences of a soul. As well as the struggles of its characters, Interview captures the political and social changes of two continents. The novel also introduces Lestat, Anne's most enduring character, a heady mixture of attraction and revulsion. The book, full of lush description, centers on the themes of immortality, change, loss, sexuality, and power.

Interesting Fact:

The original manuscript for Interview was quite different than the final published version. After the rights had been sold to Knopf, Anne rewrote the book, adding the entire Theater of the Vampires section and bringing Lestat back after his supposed death by fire.

'After Midnight' surpassed my highest expectations. I had waited to get my hands on a copy of this book for what seemed like an eternity but it was well worth the wait! I liked the secret message, it was the first bit I read! 'Alice' is such a tough character, with just enough emotional burdens to make her human! The connections at the end of the book were quite unexpected which just added to my enjoyable read! A definate 10 / 10

Thraxas is a private investigator in the mystical city of Turai. He has some sorcerous powers but mainly he just drinks a lot of beer. Consequently he's always broke and has to live in the poor part of the city. Thraxas is overweight, bad tempered, and a keen gambler at the chariot races. He doesn't make for a pretty sight, which is why the picture on the left is of his friend Makri. (Original artwork by Julian Gibson, adapted for my website by Simon Fraser.) Makri is an escapee from the gladiator pits, and the most savage fighter ever seen in Turai. She's also a budding intellectual and divides her time between her studies and hacking up opponents.

Where do I get my books? I love scouring a second hand book shop, but they are far and few between now, and not that cheap really. Of course we have haunted every library in Australia and read the entire contents!!! Swap meets are better for bargains, one mans trash truly is another mans treasure. I should have shares in a few book companies, but don't, so other than traveling to India, where you can honestly purchase the same books for one quarter of the price, I go into Dymocks so there is no postage to pay or I love amazon for new release, but the postage can sting!
